EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS
With rising prices, efficiency is becoming more of an issue! One thing I have noticed is that, as hot as it gets here in Tucson, very few people have Attic fans. This is a problem because heat can radiate down from the attic or crawl spaces and make the AC work much harder. I have seen 100 degrees to 160 degrees and heard of 180 degrees in attic or crawl spaces. With temperatures that high, it is a matter of time before it radiates down through insulation. How fast depends on how much insulation. How to fight this is better ventilation. Here are some options:
1. Vents without a fan are OK.
2. Vents with fans are Much Better.
There are fans powered by electricity on thermostats. There are 2 types of power:
A. Power from the house;
alot of times the cost of running electric to the fan and the cost to run the fan, makes the second option much better!
B. Solar powered Attic fans are great! No need to run power to it. No need to pay for electric to power the fan that makes your house more efficient. In my opinion, this is a win, win situation.
It's not as expensive as you may think.
Some solar attic fans come with a life time guarantee, so you only pay once and the efficiency is FREE after that! The choice is yours!
People with Coolers, I have Tips for you too!
Heat rises and cooled air sinks because it is heavier. When you open the front door the of the house when the cooler is on, hot air as well as cool air is going out the door. If you open the top of the window, if you can, or just open the window, then the hot air in the house will go out the window. The cooler air will stay towards the floor because the window is higher than the door. The cooler air can not rush out the window but it can rush out the door!
How Coolers Work!
They evaporate water. For every gallon of water
that is evaporated, 972 BTU's of heat go with the evaporation of water. This makes the air and water that is left behind cooler by removing the heat.
Humidity is how much water is in the air around us. In the desert humidity is very low for most of the year and coolers are very effective. In the
monsoon, they don't work as well because the humidity is higher. Therefore, it is harder for the water to evaporate into the air. Thus, less evaporation, less cooling.
